Early Carboniferous tetrapods in Australia
THE earliest tetrapod fauna yet discovered in the Southern Hemisphere comes from the Drummond basin of central Queensland, Australia. The fauna is of Early Carboniferous age (mid-Viséan, about 333 Myr ago) and comprises at least three types of tetrapods in association with abundant freshwater fishes. Two of the tetrapods (a colosteid and, less certainly, a temnospondyl) are distantly related to living amphibians, whereas the third (an anthracosaur) is an early relative of the amniotes. All three tetrapods rank among the oldest known representatives of their clades, and two of them (colosteid and anthracosaur) represent groups previously confined to Europe and North America. By virtue of its geographic remoteness, early age, and taxonomic diversity, the Drummond basin fauna has important implications for current understanding of early tetrapod history. Most significantly, it indicates that several major groups of tetrapods were distributed worldwide through equatorial regions during the Early Carboniferous.

A new Early Carboniferous tetrapod with a mélange of crown-group characters
Living (that is, crown-group) tetrapods represent the phylogenetic end-points of two lineages which diverged from each other during the mid/late Palaeozoic era. These two groups of tetrapods are the Amphibia (frogs, salamanders and caecilians), with their roots among temnospondyls, and the Amniota (mammals, turtles, crocodiles, birds, lizards and snakes), with their roots among anthracosaurs. The earliest representatives of both lineages, including a stem amniote, are known from the Viséan of East Kirkton, Scotland. Here I describe a new taxon from this locality that not only combines characters of each lineage, but also represents the basal member of a third Palaeozoic group, the baphetids. The baphetids lie within the base of the crown clade of tetrapods and the morphology of the new taxon, their most primitive member, is a new benchmark for studying the polarity and evolution of crown tetrapod characters.

Evolutionary cut and paste
Fossil discoveries can muddle our attempts to construct simple evolutionary trees — fossils from key periods are often not intermediates, but rather hodgepodges of defining features of many different groups. The latest example of this phenomenon is announced on page 66 of this issue1, where Jennifer Clack describes a 334-million-year-old fossil amphibian that displays, in the same animal, characters that are usually associated with three different types of primitive tetrapod.

An amniote-like skeleton from the Early Carboniferous of Scotland
The origin of tetrapods occurred in the Late Devonian period, and the earliest known taxa were aquatic. A gap of 30 million years has separated these early forms from the first record of terrestrial tetrapods, in the Late Viséan (Early Carboniferous). Here we report the discovery of a small, highly ossified, postcranial skeleton of a terrestrially adapted, amniote-like tetrapod from the Mid Viséan; this specimen shows the earliest known pentadactyl manus. The skeleton is associated with a gracile humerus that has a constricted shaft and exhibits torsion between proximal and distal articulations. These features are associated with the maintenance of postural support and are strong evidence of locomotion on land. The specimen pushes back the known occurrence of terrestrial vertebrates closer to the origin of tetrapods. Phylogenetic analysis places this new animal close to undisputed amniotes occurring in the Westphalian, indicating that, by the Mid–Late Viséan, amniotes already had a long, but previously unrecorded, history. The origin of amniotes seems to have occurred early in the Carboniferous and was part of a rapid diversification of tetrapods at this time. http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v398/n6727/full/398508a0.html
